Clay masks are one of those products I don’t like splurging on (girl needs to save money for retinol serums), so I just had to investigate. Here’s all you need to know about how these two masks compare and, most importantly, who won my vote:

What Ingredients Do L’Oreal Paris Pure Clay Detox Mask And Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment Have In Common?
MONTMORILLONITE AND KAOLIN CLAYS TO ABSORB EXCESS OIL
Clay masks work thanks to clay, but they’re not all created equal. Here are the two main clays in both masks:
- Monmorillonite: A clay made with bentonite (a super absorbent clay) and fuller’s earth (a brownish white substance found in sediment). Montmorillonite is very absorbent: it soaks up excess oil, preventing pimples.
- Kaolin clay: Another clay that absorbs excess oil, but it’s less powerful than montmorillonite.
L’Oreal Paris Pure Clay Detox Mask has more Kaolin than Monmorillonite, whereas for Glamglow is the opposite. If you have combination or slightly oily skin, the L’Oreal mask may be the better choice. It’ll soak up the excess oil, but still leave you enough to keep your skin naturally moisturised.

L’OREAL PARIS PURE CLAY DETOX MASK
- Aqua / Water: The main solvent in the product, it helps to dissolve other ingredients.
- Lecithin: An emollient that increases skin’s moisture levels to make it softer and smoother.
- Polysorbate 20: It’s an emulsifier that keeps the oily and watery parts of a product from separating into a gooey mess.
- Butylene Glycol: It attracts and builds water to the skin for added hydration. Plus, it helps other ingredients better penetrates skin.
- Propylene Glycol: It increases skin’s hydration levels and enhances the absorption of other skincare ingredients.
- Oryza Sativa Starch / Rice Starch: It increases the texture and viscosity of skincare products.
- CI 77499 / Iron Oxides: It gives the mask a blackish tint. Harmless, but makes a mess in your bathroom.
- Moroccan Lava Clay: It absorbs excess oil from your skin. It’s more hydrating than most other types of clay.
- Charcoal Powder: It helps absorb excess oil and impurities from your skin. But it doesn’t go as deep into your pores as brands claims. Still, it’s a wonderful active and it does help prevent acne.
- Caprylyl Glycol: It has humectant properties that hydrate skin. It also has mild preservative properties that help skincare products last longer.
- Citric Acid: It adjusts the pH of skincare products.
- Xanthan Gum: It thickens the texture of skincare products.
- Polyglycerin-10: It’s an emulsifier that keeps the oily and watery parts of a formula from separating.
- Polyglyceryl-10 Myristate: It makes skin softer.
- Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate: As an emollient, it makes skin softer. As an emulsifier, it prevents the oily and watery ingredients from separating.
- Sodium Dehydroacetate: A preservative that inhibits the growth of germs and bacteria in cosmetics, so they last longer.
- Phenoxyethanol: A common preservative that kills bacteria, helping your skincare products last longer.
- Linalool: A fragrant ingredient that smells floral and spicy. It must be listed separately as it’s a common allergen.
- Limonene: One of the main fragrant component in citrus fruits, it makes the mask smell lovely. But it can irritate sensitive skin.
- Perfume / Fragrance: The most irritating ingredient found in skincare products. It makes the mask smell good, but can irritate sensitive skin.
GLAMFLOW YOUTHMUD TINGLEXFOLIATE TREATMENT
- Water\Aqua\Eau: The main solvent in this mask, it helps to dissolve other ingredients.
- Magnesium Aluminum Silicate: A texture thickener that also makes the formula opaque.
- Silica: It helps to absorb excess oil as well as thickening the texture of skincare products.
- Pumice: A porous volcanic rock that exfoliates skin. It’s very abrasive so it could scratch your skin if you’re not careful. I don’t mind using it on rough areas such as feet and elbows, but I don’t want it anywhere near my face. If your skin is pretty resistant and you’re super careful, this could work for you. But if your skin is sensitive, run away!
- Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf: A powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals, reduces inflammation and helps protect against UV-induced damage.
- Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract: Derived from green tea, it too has powerful antioxidants with soothing properties to fight the two main causes of premature aging, free radicals and inflammation.
- Lavandula Hybrida (Lavandin) Oil: Derived from lavender, this oil makes the mask smell nice, but can irritate sensitive skin.
- Hedera Helix (Ivy) Extract: It has astringent properties, but can irritate sensitive skin.
- Centella Asiatica (Hydrocotyl) Extract: One of the most soothing ingredients in skincare, it reduces redness and irritations. Plus, it has antioxidants that can fight premature wrinkles.
- Ruscus Aculeatus (Butcherbroom) Root Extract: An antioxidant that helps fight the free radicals that cause premature wrinkles.
- Silybum Marianum (Lady’S Thistle) Extract: Also known as milk thistle, it has powerful antioxidant and soothing properties.
- Tocopheryl Acetate: A form of Vitamin E with hydrating and antioxidants properties.

WHICH FORMULA IS BETTER?
L‘Oreal Paris Pure Clay Detox Mask has fewer antioxidants and doesn’t exfoliate skin, but it’s gentler and better suitable even for dry skin.
Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment absorbs more oil, exfoliates skin, and has green tea to fight premature wrinkles. But it also has the potential to be more irritating. If you have sensitive skin, beware.
What’s The Texture Like?
L‘Oreal Paris Pure Clay Detox Mask has a dark and muddy texture. But it is messy to use.
Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment is dark and muddy, too. There’s not much difference between textures. They look pretty much the same – and are just as messy.
What’s The Packaging Like?
L‘Oreal Paris Pure Clay Detox Mask is housed in a see-through jar with a green cap.
Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment comes in a black jar that evokes the colour of pumice.
How To Use Them
As all clay masks, I recommend you use them at night, straight after cleansing. No more than 3 times a week. That’s more than enough to remove excess oil without drying out skin too much. Leave them on for 10-20 minutes, depending on what the instructions say, before washing them off with lukewarm water. Be warned: the removal process is messy.
Which Of The Two Should You Go For?
Unless your skin is very oily and can take the extra exfoliation, L‘Oreal Paris Pure Clay Detox Mask is the better option. It’s more basic, but is gentler on the skin. Gentler is the key word. Most skin issues are caused by doing too much and irritating skin. This is especially true if you have acne, an inflammatory condition. You need to turn the inflammation down, not up.

I wouldn’t call it a dupe. L’Oreal Paris Pure Clay Detox Mask is a stripped down version of the fancier Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment. I usually like the extras, but this time I’m giving my vote to L’Oreal. It may lack antioxidants, but at least it doesn’t contain anything super irritating, either.
